Velykomihaylovskiy district reaches 143 600 ha. District borders Frunzivskiy and Shiryaivskiy districts on the North, Ivanivskiy – on the East, Rozdilnyanskiy – on the South, Republic of Moldova – on the West. Climate is moderate continental, dry.
Velyka Mihaylovka is the administrative, agricultural, social and cultural centre of the district. There are 82 settlements that included in 22 village councils.
Representatives of more than 40 nationalities live on district's territory: Ukrainians – 79,4%, Russians – 14,5%, Moldavians – 3,8%, Bulgarians – 1,1%, Armenians – 0,3%. Odessa – Kiev railroad and 4 highways lie through district's territory.
Territory of the district is mostly plain with canyons. Animal husbandry with focus on milk-meat production is well developed. It provides 41% of district profits.
